Yes. Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA) offers telehealth appointments in certain circumstances; however, we strongly believe that in-person care remains the gold standard for psychiatric treatment whenever possible.
Mental health care is deeply personal, and face-to-face appointments allow providers to build stronger therapeutic relationships, observe important nonverbal cues, conduct more comprehensive assessments, and create a more connected treatment experience. For many patients, especially children and adolescents, in-person visits can provide valuable opportunities for engagement and rapport-building that are difficult to fully replicate through a screen.
That said, we recognize that telehealth can be an important tool for increasing access to care and supporting continuity of treatment. Virtual appointments may be available for established patients and in situations where travel, health concerns, scheduling challenges, or other circumstances make an office visit difficult.
Telehealth appointments are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform and may be appropriate for:
Medication management follow-up appointments
Certain psychiatric follow-up visits
Individual therapy sessions
Ongoing treatment and care coordination
Patients who are unable to attend in person due to specific circumstances
The availability of virtual appointments depends on clinical appropriateness, patient needs, age, treatment goals, and provider recommendations. Some evaluations, assessments, and treatment situations may require an in-person visit to ensure the highest quality of care.
At FPPA, our philosophy is simple: we use telehealth when it benefits the patient, but we continue to value and encourage in-person appointments whenever possible to provide the most comprehensive and effective psychiatric care.
If you have questions about whether a virtual appointment is appropriate for your situation, our team will be happy to discuss your options and help determine the best fit for your needs.

At Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA), our primary responsibility is to our patients, not to insurance companies. By operating as an out-of-network practice, we are able to focus on providing individualized, high-quality mental health care based on clinical judgment, patient needs, and best practices rather than insurance company requirements.
Many insurance companies place restrictions on mental health treatment, including limitations on appointment length, visit frequency, covered services, diagnostic requirements, and treatment authorizations. These restrictions can sometimes interfere with the provider's ability to deliver care in the manner they believe is most beneficial for the patient.
By remaining independent of insurance networks, FPPA is able to offer:
Treatment recommendations based on clinical need rather than insurance guidelines
More comprehensive psychiatric evaluations
Greater flexibility in appointment length and scheduling
Enhanced continuity of care
Increased privacy and confidentiality
The ability to focus on the patient-provider relationship rather than administrative requirements
More personalized treatment planning tailored to each individual's goals and circumstances
Our providers have the freedom to spend the time necessary to fully understand each patient's concerns, develop thoughtful treatment plans, and provide care that is centered on long-term wellness rather than insurance-driven metrics.
Can I Still Use My Insurance?
In many cases, yes.
Many private insurance plans include out-of-network benefits, which may reimburse patients for a portion or all of the cost of psychiatric and therapy services. The amount reimbursed depends on your specific insurance plan, deductible, and out-of-network coverage.
To make reimbursement as simple as possible, FPPA provides patients with detailed itemized receipts, often referred to as a superbill, following their appointments.
These receipts include:
Diagnostic codes (which identify the condition being treated)
CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology codes), which are the standardized medical billing codes used nationwide to describe healthcare services provided by physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals
Provider Information
Tax Identification Number
Date of service
Amount paid
Most insurance companies now allow patients to submit out-of-network claims electronically through their online member portal or mobile app, making the reimbursement process straightforward and convenient.
The Best of Both Worlds
Many FPPA patients find that they receive the benefits of highly personalized, independent psychiatric care while still utilizing their insurance's out-of-network reimbursement benefits. This approach allows treatment decisions to remain where they belong, between patients and their providers, while still giving patients the opportunity to recover a portion or all of their healthcare expenses through their insurance plan.
If you have questions about out-of-network benefits, our team is happy to help explain the process and provide the documentation needed for claim submission. We also encourage patients to contact their insurance carrier directly to learn more about their specific out-of-network mental health coverage.
-
Yes. Protecting your privacy and confidentiality is a fundamental part of the care we provide at Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA).
All patient information, appointments, medical records, and communications are handled in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other applicable privacy laws. Our providers and staff are committed to maintaining the confidentiality of your personal health information and treating every patient with dignity, respect, and discretion.
Information shared during your appointments is kept confidential and is only disclosed with your written authorization or when required by law.
Your provider will discuss confidentiality and communication expectations with both parents and child/adolescent patients as appropriate.
As an independent practice, FPPA is also able to maintain a greater degree of privacy than many insurance-based practices.
Our goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where patients feel comfortable discussing sensitive concerns openly and honestly, knowing their privacy is respected and protected.
If you have questions about confidentiality, medical records, or how information is shared, our team will be happy to discuss our privacy practices with you.
-
No. Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA) is an outpatient psychiatric and mental health practice and is not an emergency psychiatric clinic, crisis center, or hospital-based emergency service.
While our providers are experienced in evaluating and treating a wide range of mental health conditions, we are not equipped to provide emergency psychiatric care on-site or respond to mental health crises requiring immediate intervention.
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency, including:
Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
Thoughts of harming others
A psychiatric crisis requiring immediate attention
Severe behavioral disturbances
Psychosis, hallucinations, or loss of touch with reality
Any situation where safety is an immediate concern
Call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency department for evaluation and treatment.
Patients may also contact or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, for immediate support from trained crisis counselors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
At FPPA, we are committed to providing high-quality outpatient psychiatric care and ongoing treatment for our patients. However, emergency situations require a higher level of care and resources than can be safely provided in an outpatient office setting.
If you are unsure whether a situation is an emergency, we encourage you to err on the side of caution and seek immediate assistance through emergency services, 911, 988, or your nearest hospital emergency department. Your safety and well-being should always come first.
-
The answer depends on your needs.
You may benefit from seeing a psychiatrist if:
You are seeking a diagnosis and treatment plan
You may need medication
You have complex psychiatric symptoms
Previous treatments have not been effective
You want a medical evaluation of your mental health concerns
You may benefit from seeing a psychologist if:
You are interested in psychotherapy
You need psychological or educational testing
You want help developing coping skills and behavioral strategies
You are seeking long-term counseling or therapy
The Best Care Often Includes Both
Many patients benefit from a team approach that includes both psychiatric care and therapy. A psychiatrist can help manage diagnosis and medication, while a psychologist or therapist can provide ongoing counseling and skills-based treatment.
How FPPA Approaches Mental Health Care
At Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA), we offer both psychiatric services and therapy services under one roof. Our psychiatrists, psychiatric providers, and therapists work collaboratively to ensure patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care.
This integrated approach allows providers to communicate in real time, align treatment goals, and create personalized care plans that address both the biological and emotional aspects of mental health. For many patients and families, having psychiatric and therapy services available within the same practice improves convenience, continuity of care, and overall treatment outcomes.
If you're unsure which type of provider is right for you or your child, our team can help determine the best place to start and guide you toward the most appropriate care.
-
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a psychiatric provider to better understand a person's emotional, behavioral, psychological, and medical health. The purpose of the evaluation is to identify concerns, establish an accurate diagnosis when appropriate, and develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to the patient's needs.
Unlike a simple symptom checklist, a psychiatric evaluation is a thoughtful and collaborative process that seeks to understand the whole person—their experiences, strengths, challenges, and goals.
What Is Assessed During a Psychiatric Evaluation?
During the evaluation, your provider will gather information about many aspects of your life, including:
Current symptoms and concerns
Emotional well-being and mood
Anxiety, stress, and coping skills
Attention, concentration, and executive functioning
Sleep patterns and energy levels
Medical history
Family history
Previous mental health treatment
Current and past medications
School or work performance
Relationships and support systems
Developmental history (for children and adolescents)
Cultural, spiritual, and personal values
This information helps your provider develop a complete picture of your mental health and overall functioning.
Why Is a Psychiatric Evaluation Important?
Mental health symptoms can have many different causes and often overlap across multiple conditions. A comprehensive evaluation helps ensure that treatment is based on a thorough understanding of your individual situation rather than assumptions or incomplete information.
The evaluation can help:
Clarify diagnoses
Identify contributing factors
Rule out medical or psychological conditions
Determine whether medication may be beneficial
Identify strengths and protective factors
Develop an effective treatment plan
Connect patients with appropriate resources and services
What Happens After the Evaluation?
At the conclusion of the evaluation, your provider will discuss their clinical impressions and recommendations. Depending on your needs, recommendations may include:
Medication management
Individual therapy
Family therapy
ADHD evaluation or treatment
Autism evaluation
Psychological testing
School or workplace accommodations
Lifestyle modifications
Coordination with other healthcare providers
In some cases, additional information or follow-up visits may be needed before a final diagnosis or treatment plan is established.
FPPA's Approach to Psychiatric Evaluations
At Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA), we believe that quality psychiatric care begins with a thorough understanding of each individual. Our evaluations are designed to be comprehensive, compassionate, and patient-centered. We take the time to listen carefully, answer questions, and understand not only symptoms, but also the personal experiences, family dynamics, cultural background, strengths, and goals that make each person unique.
Rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis, our goal is to develop a meaningful understanding of the whole person and create a treatment plan that supports long-term emotional health, resilience, and overall well-being.
-
Seeking psychiatric care for your child can feel overwhelming, especially if it is your family's first experience with mental health treatment. At Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA), our goal is to create a welcoming, supportive environment where children, adolescents, and families feel comfortable, respected, and heard.
Before the Appointment
Prior to your child's visit, you may be asked to complete intake forms, questionnaires, and provide information about your child's medical, developmental, educational, and mental health history. This information helps our providers gain a better understanding of your child's needs before the appointment.
During the Initial Evaluation
The first appointment is typically a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. During this visit, the psychiatrist will spend time getting to know both your child and your family.
Topics that may be discussed include:
Current concerns and symptoms
Emotional and behavioral challenges
School performance and learning concerns
Social relationships and friendships
Family history
Medical history
Developmental milestones
Previous treatments or evaluations
Strengths, interests, and goals
Depending on your child's age and comfort level, portions of the visit may be conducted with parents and child together, and portions separately. This helps ensure that both the child and caregivers have an opportunity to share information openly.
A Focus on the Whole Child
At FPPA, we believe that understanding a child requires looking beyond symptoms alone. We take into account:
Family dynamics
School environment
Social experiences
Cultural background
Religious or spiritual beliefs
Developmental stage
Individual strengths and challenges
Our goal is to understand the whole child and develop recommendations that fit their unique needs and circumstances.
Will Medication Be Prescribed?
Not necessarily.
Medication is only one of many tools available in psychiatric treatment. During the evaluation, your provider will discuss treatment options and recommendations based on your child's specific situation. In some cases, medication may be recommended. In others, therapy, behavioral interventions, school supports, lifestyle modifications, or additional evaluation may be the most appropriate next step.
Any medication recommendations will be discussed thoroughly with parents and caregivers, including potential benefits, risks, and alternatives.
Collaborative Care
We believe children achieve the best outcomes when everyone works together. With appropriate consent, our providers may collaborate with:
Parents and caregivers
Pediatricians and primary care providers
Therapists and counselors
Schools and educational professionals
Other specialists involved in your child's care
This team-based approach helps ensure coordinated and effective treatment.
Specialized Child Psychiatry Expertise
FPPA is proud to have Dr. Tian Duke-Sui, a highly respected child and adolescent psychiatrist, on our team. With years of experience caring for children, adolescents, and families, Dr. Duke-Sui has earned the trust of colleagues and the community through his thoughtful, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to psychiatric care. His expertise helps families navigate complex emotional, behavioral, developmental, and psychiatric concerns with confidence and support.
After the Visit
At the conclusion of the evaluation, your provider will discuss their impressions, answer questions, and review recommended next steps. These may include:
Follow-up psychiatric appointments
Medication management
Individual or family therapy
ADHD or autism evaluations
School accommodations or supports
Referrals for additional services when appropriate
Our Commitment to Families
We understand that bringing your child to a psychiatrist can feel intimidating. At FPPA, we strive to make every visit a positive experience by creating a compassionate, judgment-free environment where children and families feel supported. Our goal is not only to address symptoms, but to help children thrive at home, in school, and in their relationships while supporting the entire family throughout the process.
At any time throughout the process we are here to help, you can reach our Medical Coordinators during normal business hours for clarification, questions, or concerns. Our Dedicated RN on staff is also available to help with education, resources, and liaison with other providers both within FPPA, and externally.
We want to assure you that you are not alone in this, and we are here to help!

Many parents worry about how to explain a psychiatric appointment to their child. The good news is that the conversation doesn't need to be complicated. In most cases, the best approach is to be honest, calm, and reassuring.
Children often take cues from the adults around them. If parents approach the appointment as a normal part of caring for a child's health and well-being, children are more likely to feel comfortable and less anxious about the experience.
Keep It Simple and Age-Appropriate
For younger children, you might say:
"We're going to meet with a doctor who helps kids with their feelings, worries, behaviors, and emotions. They talk with lots of children and families and want to get to know you and see how they can help."
For older children and teenagers, you might say:
"We're meeting with a mental health professional who helps people understand things like stress, anxiety, attention, emotions, and other challenges. This is an opportunity for us to learn more about what's going on and find ways to help you feel your best."
Emphasize That They Are Not in Trouble
One of the most common fears children have is that they are being taken to the psychiatrist because they have done something wrong.
It can be helpful to reassure them by saying:
"You're not in trouble."
"This isn't a punishment."
"We want to better understand how you're feeling."
"We're meeting with someone whose job is to help kids and families."
"Everyone needs help sometimes."
Be Honest About the Process
Let your child know that the provider will likely ask questions about:
School
Friends
Family
Feelings
Interests and hobbies
Things that are going well
Things that may be difficult
Reassure them that there are no "right" or "wrong" answers and that the provider simply wants to get to know them.
Avoid Labels and Assumptions
Before the appointment, try to avoid statements such as:
"You're going because you have ADHD."
"You're going because something is wrong."
"The doctor is going to fix your behavior."
Instead, focus on understanding:
"We're going to learn more about what's been challenging and see how we can support you."
Encourage Questions
Children and teens often have concerns that they may not express unless invited.
Consider asking:
"Is there anything you're worried about?"
"Do you have any questions about the appointment?"
"Is there anything you want the doctor to know?"
Allowing them to share their concerns can help reduce anxiety before the visit.
What If My Child Doesn't Want to Go?
This is common, especially for older children and teenagers.
Try to acknowledge their feelings while remaining supportive:
"I understand that this may feel uncomfortable, and it's okay to feel nervous. We don't expect you to have all the answers. We're just meeting with someone who wants to understand what you're going through and see how they can help."
FPPA's Approach to Child and Adolescent Care
At Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA), we understand that meeting a psychiatrist can feel intimidating for both children and parents. Our providers work hard to create a welcoming, relaxed environment where young patients feel comfortable, respected, and heard.
We believe children and adolescents are more than a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. Our goal is to understand the whole child, their strengths, personality, interests, challenges, family relationships, and life experiences, so we can develop the most effective and individualized treatment plan possible.
Many children leave their first appointment feeling relieved to discover that it is simply a conversation with someone who genuinely wants to help them succeed and feel their best! Many children look forward to their follow up appointments as our clinic’s atmosphere and staff go above and beyond to make sure that every patient, child, adolescent, and adult feels comfortable, safe and supported at FPPA!

We understand that starting mental health treatment can feel overwhelming, especially if it's your first experience with psychiatric care. At Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA), our goal is to make the process as comfortable, informative, and supportive as possible.
Before Your Appointment
Prior to your first visit, you will be asked to complete intake paperwork and provide information about your medical history, mental health concerns, medications, and other relevant background information. Completing these forms thoroughly helps your provider make the most of your appointment time.
Our Medical Coordinators are available to answer questions and help guide you through the onboarding process before your visit.
During Your First Appointment
Your initial appointment is typically a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Unlike a brief primary care visit, psychiatric evaluations are designed to provide a detailed understanding of your concerns, symptoms, history, and goals. These appointments last from 90 - 120 minutes.
Your provider may discuss:
Current symptoms and concerns
Emotional and mental health history
Medical history
Family history
Current and past medications
School or work performance
Relationships and support systems
Sleep, appetite, and lifestyle factors
Previous counseling or psychiatric treatment
Personal strengths, interests, and goals
Our providers take the time to understand the whole person, not just a diagnosis or a list of symptoms.
A Collaborative Approach
At FPPA, we believe that the best treatment plans are developed collaboratively. Your provider will listen carefully to your concerns, answer questions, and work with you to develop a plan that aligns with your goals and values.
We recognize that every patient's experience is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health care.
Will I Receive a Diagnosis?
Possibly. In many cases, your provider may be able to discuss diagnostic impressions during the first appointment. However, some situations require additional information, records, testing, or follow-up visits before a diagnosis can be confidently established.
Our priority is accuracy and thoroughness rather than rushing to conclusions.
Will Medication Be Prescribed?
Medication is one of many tools available in psychiatric treatment. Depending on your situation, your provider may recommend:
Medication management
Individual therapy
ADHD or autism evaluations
Lifestyle modifications
School or workplace accommodations
Additional testing or assessments
Coordination with other healthcare professionals
If medication is recommended, your provider will discuss the potential benefits, risks, alternatives, and answer any questions you may have.
Therapy and Additional Services
FPPA offers both psychiatric care and therapy services. If therapy would be beneficial, we can help connect you with one of our therapists or coordinate care with your existing therapist. Having psychiatric and therapy services under one roof allows our providers to collaborate in real time and provide more coordinated care.
What Happens After My First Visit?
At the end of your appointment, your provider will review their recommendations and discuss next steps. Depending on your needs, this may include:
Follow-up appointments
Medication management
Therapy services
ADHD evaluation
Autism evaluation
School or workplace recommendations

Family Psychiatry Practice & Associates (FPPA) provides psychiatric evaluations for individuals who require mental health assessments in connection with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical certification requirements.
The FAA has specific standards regarding mental health conditions, psychiatric treatment, and certain medications. The purpose of an FAA psychiatric evaluation is to provide a thorough, objective assessment that addresses the FAA's questions and helps determine an individual's fitness for aviation duties.
Step 1: Initial Consultation and Record Review
Before scheduling the evaluation, our team will discuss your specific situation and determine what documentation may be needed. Depending on the reason for the evaluation, patients may be asked to provide:
FAA correspondence or requests
Previous psychiatric records
Therapy records
Medical records
Medication history
Neuropsychological testing results (if applicable)
Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) recommendations
Having these records available before the appointment helps ensure a comprehensive and efficient evaluation.
Step 2: Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation
The evaluation typically includes:
Review of psychiatric history
Review of medical history
Review of current and past medications
Assessment of mood, anxiety, attention, sleep, and cognitive functioning
Evaluation of substance use history
Assessment of occupational and aviation functioning
Review of any prior mental health treatment
Mental status examination
The scope and length of the evaluation may vary depending on the FAA's requirements and the complexity of the case.
Step 3: Additional Testing (If Required)
Some FAA cases may require additional evaluations or testing. If specialized testing is needed, we will discuss recommendations and coordinate appropriate referrals when necessary.
Step 4: Report Preparation
Following the evaluation, the provider will prepare a detailed report addressing the relevant clinical findings and FAA-related concerns.
The report may include:
Diagnostic impressions
Treatment history
Current psychiatric status
Medication review
Functional assessment
Clinical recommendations
Information requested by the FAA or Aviation Medical Examiner
Step 5: Submission to the FAA or AME
Patients are typically responsible for submitting the completed evaluation to their Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) or directly to the FAA, depending on the circumstances of their case. Our team can help explain the process and provide the necessary documentation.
